As a service technician, located in Oconomowoc Wisconsin, I have always been surprised when people think there refrigerator is garbage when the fix is very simple and costs less than $200. The biggest myth is that the compressor is shot. People believe that since the refrigerator is not cooling the compressor has quit working. While this is possible it is really only about 10% of the time that the compressor fails.
Most issues have to do with much simpler solutions such as over-frosting, due to the machine not going through the defrost cycle. The root cause of this is either a worn defrost timer, a bad defrost heater (mostly found on GE products), or a bad defrost limit switch.
